Some of you may have heard of a diet called the Keto Diet. It typically asks you to eat a lot of fat, some proteins, but limit your carbohydrate intake to around 5% of your calories. I personally think this leads to a lot of problems further down the line, but this article also looks at what a Keto diet might be doing to our Gut Microbiome. Gut Mircobiome is basically our gut culture, and the more vibrant our gut microbes are, the stronger our immune systems will be. So science says to have a thriving gut culture is extremely important for our health.

Here are 3 diets that Americans face, that people, in general consider healthy. Obviously, if you are in the Keto camp, it would be a very different story. I am not making judgement calls but simply looking at who says what is good, less bad, and bad.

The First on on the list is the diet recommended by the American Heart Association. I would like to refer to this diet as the Standard American Diet (SAD). Then there is the Mediterranean Diet, which many people like following because it feels healthy. Then there is Dr. Esselstyn’s Heart Disease Reversal Diet or the Whole Food Plant Based diet on steroids because it asks to watch the intake of all types of oils including nuts, advocados and coconut.

Foods to… American Heart Association Diet Mediterranean Diet Esselstyn Heart Disease Reversal Diet
EMPHASIZE Fruits, Vegetables, Whole grains, Fish, Poultry, Nuts, Low-fat dairy products. Fruits, Vegetables, Whole grains, Fish, “Healthy fats” like olive oil, Nuts, Avocados Fruits, Vegetables, Whole grains, Legumes, Healthy starches (potatoes, roots, etc.)
LIMIT Red meat, Sugary foods & beverages, Saturated fat, Highly Processed food, Sodium, Alcohol. Slightly limit: Yogurt, Cheese, Poultry, Eggs, Wine, Significantly limit:
Red meat Sweets
Sweets,
Soy foods,
Alcohol,
Caffeine
AVOID Partially hydrogenated oil, Tropical oil, Excessive calories. NothingAdded oils, Meats (including fish & poultry), Eggs, Nuts, Avocados, Coconut, Dairy (all cow’s milk and cheese),
Fruit juices
OTHER   N/A Include vitamin B12 supplement

*Dr. Esselstyn addresses the question about nuts, avocado, and coconut:

“As nuts are a rich source of saturated fats, my preference is no nuts for heart disease patients. That also eliminates peanuts and peanut butter, even though peanuts are officially a legume. For those with established heart disease to add more saturated fat is inappropriate. For people with no heart disease who want to eat nuts, avocado, and coconut and are able to achieve a cholesterol of 150 and LDL of 80 or under without cholesterol lowering drugs, some nuts, avocado, and coconut are acceptable.”

Here is a Youtube clip of Dr. William Li giving his Ted Talk (20 minutes or so) back in 2014 on Angiogenesis. If you want to fastword where he starts talking about cancer and food, go to the 11th minute.

You can take from this what you will, but this is my takeaway:

  1. Every single adult has cancer. They are normally microscopic cancer, and they normally die, as they are naturally quite weak.
  2. But if our diet consist of 10% or more of protein, we start feeding this microscopic cancer, and they develop into a DNA adduct (a segment of DNA bound to a cancer-causing chemical), then foci (cluster of cells that are notably different through mutation from the surrounding cells. They are generally the first sign of a developing lesion or tumors), then to tumors. If the cancer progresses further, it has metastasized.
  3. This process takes a long time (many many years).
  4. If we consume veggies, fruits, spices/herbs and nuts, we can naturally eat a diet that is 10% or less in protein, and combat these microscopic cancers through antioxidants we would be consuming.
  5. You can prevent cancer, you can even reverse cancer to some degree, and if you have had cancer surgery, while in remission, you can certainly prevent cancer from coming back.

Type ‘C8 Dupont’ on google, and you will learn about a carcinogen. Carcinogens are all around us. We are all exposed. If not by C8, then by other carcinogens.

Here is a study done on 118 rats. They were all exposed to another known carcinogen called Aflotoxin (AF). These rats were divided into two groups. First group were fed 20% of their diet with animal protein. Second group were fed 5% of their diet with animal protein. Both groups had same amount of total caloric intake.

Only difference was the amount of protein intake. (5% group were fed 15% more in carbs).

Rats generally live for 2 years. This was a 100 week study.

Group 1 saw all 58 rats die within the 100 weeks. The autopsy showed 3,321 tumors on these rats.

Group 2 saw all 60 rats still alive after the 100 weeks. The autopsy showed 248 tumors on these rats. All the rats were quite active at 100 weeks.

The animal protein was casein, which is a chief protein in milk and the essential ingredient of cheese. (Sorry if you love cheese.)
